The right amount of iron

There’s a wide variety of iron-containing supplements available over-the-counter. Yet of all the choices, few contain the right amount of elemental iron to treat iron deficiency.

If you are diagnosed with iron deficiency, 3-6 months therapy is usually recommended to replenish your iron stores. Iron tablets should not be taken for more than 12 months except on medical advice1.

Before you self-prescribe, remember it’s also risky to have too much iron. Iron deficiency should be properly diagnosed, and the underlying cause should be identified so make sure you see your doctor first.

Don't self-treat with iron supplements without a proper diagnosis.

If you suspect iron deficiency, see your doctor.
